When war broke out in 1914, Revd Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy was one of the first to enlist. He volunteered as a military chaplain, and although a non-combatant himself, encouraged everyone to sign up for military service. This enthusiasm quickly began to wane as he saw for himself the horrors of war and the suffering that was inflicted on the troops from both sides.
